Story
Nicholas Arbatsky is an artist known for his multimedia projects and installations that explore themes of environment and perception [2]. His work has been featured in significant exhibitions, including the TSX Times Square Takeover and the Times Square Artist Showcase, both in 2023 [2]. Arbatsky's art often blurs the lines between familiar and unrecognizable imagery, creating a unique viewing experience [2].
The "Timberline Series" is a collection of images and installations by Nicholas Arbatsky that began in 1998 [2]. This project originated on the western slopes of Mt. Hood, Oregon, at altitudes ranging between 2,000 and 11,000 feet above sea level [2]. Arbatsky utilized a motion-based camera to capture the landscape, transforming it into what he describes as a discrete non-referential object [2]. The resulting images, which appear just out of the viewer's focus, aim to capture the shape of wind and the color of time, presenting a layered panorama in a single negative [2]. The film was later scanned to digital files and printed onto Sintra using archival UV pigmented ink [2].
Nicholas Arbatsky has a long-standing fascination with environmental themes, which has informed his work for over 30 years [2]. One notable project involved creating petroleum-soaked canvases on-site in Beauty Bay, Alaska, during the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill [2]. This direct engagement with an environmental disaster highlights Arbatsky's commitment to reflecting real-world issues in his art [2]. Other projects, such as "The Romance of Fuel Injected Flesh" and "In the Silence of 16 Valves Running," are viewer-activated installations presented in galleries and museums [2].
Nicholas Arbatsky's work has been showcased in several prominent exhibitions, including the TSX Times Square Takeover in New York City in 2023 [2]. In the same year, his art was also featured in the Times Square Artist Showcase, curated by Plogix Gallery [2]. Additionally, Arbatsky participated in the NFT.NYC 2023 Community Artists Showcase [2]. His digital motion capture installations from the "Timberline Series" were specifically presented at these events [2]. Nicholas Arbatsky was also associated with the NFT.NYC 2025 Commemorative NFT Ticket - GA [3].
Nicholas Arbatsky's artistic approach is characterized by a blend of environmental engagement and innovative photographic techniques. He aims to transform familiar landscapes into abstract, non-referential objects, inviting viewers to perceive them in a new light [2]. His use of motion-based cameras and specific photographic viewpoints, such as increments of 180, 270, and 360 degrees, demonstrates a methodical yet creative process [2]. By capturing layered panoramas in single negatives, Arbatsky blurs the distinction between the familiar and the unrecognizable, prompting a deeper contemplation of the subject matter [2]. His projects, whether addressing environmental disasters or exploring motion in nature, consistently push the boundaries of traditional artistic representation [2].
